The War of the Words

Every English student knows well the feeling of trying to find the right words to use in an essay or assignment. In the case of one particular 4th year English assignment, the task was more exciting and enjoyable than usual!

It was my last term at the University of Victoria, and I had two lit classes left to complete my degree--I chose American Lit and Victorian Lit, and was happy with my decision. Previously, on this blog, I shared an essay from my American Lit class, and now I will share one from Victorian Lit. Only this is not an essay, but rather an assignment that I was quite surprised to see on the syllabus. A parody!

That's right, we were to write a short piece, on any topic, using the style of an author/ text that was covered in class. I decided to do a parody of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. I wrote about an all-too-familiar scene around UVic--waiting for coffee in a long lineup in the popular Biblio Cafe. I have posted it below. Enjoy! And, be mindful of the fact that my explanation is rather weak. In typical 4th year panicked student fashion, I wrote it right before running to class. Literally. I think I ran. Happy reading, folks! And, for those of you working on a project or assignment, happy writing!

Draft Dodging

I am a draft dodger.

Evidence of this can be found almost everywhere: in my notebooks, on my phone, on this blog. You don't see it, but I do. I'm great at starting things, but not so great at finishing them.

I currently have three drafts on this blog, which isn't bad, considering I had six last week. Rather than finishing and posting, I decided to direct my energy into deleting them. I guess that, with blogging, it's best to just write and post immediately. Half the time I write some stuff, save it, then avoid it.

After reading through the drafts on this site, I realized that a lot of what I wrote seemed completely irrelevant. Or stupid.  That kinda scares me, because it makes me wonder about previous posts. Good thing I rarely read over old posts.

Actually, I probably should, as James often points out grammatical or spelling errors from previous blog entries. I suppose that's what I get for, at times, being overly ambitious about getting things out there and not overthinking. I guess being mindful and reading carefully BEFORE posting is really what needs improvement.

In any case, I find it weird that I tend not to go back to drafts once I leave them for awhile. Some of the ones on my blog have been sitting there for months, getting no attention, and a few of my story ideas have sat dormant for years in notebooks and folders.

As I sit here in my housecoat...do you say housecoat or robe? To me, robe just sounds sleazy. Anyway, as I sit here, in my housecoat, I realize that I need to make a commitment to spend more time with my writing--with my ideas--and less time with Scully and Mulder.

Or, maybe I can just watch one episode of The X-Files per night, and stop allowing myself to be sucked into the mothership. But I LOVE me some X-Files, and I want to get caught up before the Revival hits in January! Maybe I can make time for both! Maybe. I want to believe...

Very Superstitious...

Happy Friday the 13th!

For some, this won't be a happy day. Rather, this will be a day of staying inside, avoiding possible interactions with black cats, ladders, and anything else that conjures up a feeling of dread or potential bad luck.

Being born on Friday the 13th, I've received much strange commentary throughout my life pertaining to that day and various superstitions associated. I remember meeting an elderly acquaintance many years ago who, upon discovering my birth date, said, "you must be very unlucky." I wish I had responded with a witty comeback, but it's fairly unlikely. From what I recall, I just offered a cold stare. I think my mom said something, but I can't be sure of what.

I've done a fair bit of reading on this subject--superstition around Friday the 13th and the number 13. Frankly, I find it weird that, to this day, many people refuse to schedule important events on the 13th, especially if it falls on a Friday.

I happen to love Friday the 13th! I'm always excited when the day approaches. For one, I enjoy observing people's neuroses, but mostly I just look forward to watching an installment of one of my favourite movie franchises.

See, Jason Voorhees and I have a special connection. Not only do we share the same birthday, but the original Friday the 13th film takes place on the day I was born. It's only natural that I came to love horror movies and the Friday the 13th series at a young age.

Well, perhaps "natural" isn't correct. I was lucky enough to be born into a household of people who enjoyed the genre. How cool that my mom, who loves a good scare, gave birth to a Friday the 13th baby?! She always told me that the day is one of good luck, especially since I was born.

The next time you, or someone you know, is thinking of rescheduling a special event due to the ominous Friday the 13th date, I suggest going ahead and booking it. Have fun with it! Play tricks on people. Get into the spirit.

Superstition ain't the way.

Hide and Seek

As a child, I preferred playing alone, but if I was to play with others, my favourite game was "Hide and Seek."

I was really, really good at it. Sometimes, I thought that if I never came out, nobody would find me. I kinda liked that feeling. I kinda still do.

I remember peering at everyone as they called my name and wandered through the park or wherever we were playing. It made me laugh, seeing the confusion turn to panic, and then I'd feel guilty. I guess that's how I'm feeling right now.

Believe it or not, I've been writing almost every day. I just haven't bothered to share anything.

I've been peeking out from my hiding place, watching everyone go about things, and occasionally considering saying hello, or something to let people know that I'm still here. I suppose that I've been experiencing that feeling from childhood--not wanting to be found. Except, without that cheeky sense of excitement in seeing those I know not know where I am.

My goal when I started this blog was to write and publish a post every week. At first, it was going well. Better than expected, actually. But, lately, there's been a shift. I haven't felt motivated to share much, and have been much more comfortable sitting on the sidelines, not expecting to make the big plays.

Being a spectator has always been my thing, but I want to be more active. I do. Hiding certainly has its perks, and being alone is good, but I'd like to come out of hiding now, focus more on seeking. What I've learned during this roughly month-long period of hibernation is that, unless you're actually working on something, (a creative project, etc) or making an effort to change what isn't working, everything remains stagnant. Seems obvious, right? I guess, for me, it wasn't.

Anyhow, I would like to make a promise to post something every week from now on. Even if it's a few sentences. Even if it's just a picture with a caption. For those of you who still visit my page (and I know there are, surprisingly, many) you will continue to have something new to look at. Even if you cannot find me out there in the world, you will most certainly find me here.
